Cottesloe Reef Snorkel.

Cottesloe Reef is one of my favourite spots for snorkelling in Perth. Just a short swim from the beach, the reef is part of a Fish Habitat Protection Area and is full of marine life. You can often see schools of fish, patches of seagrass, and colourful corals that make the water feel alive.

At the southern edge of the reef, you’ll also find an interesting piece of history. Submerged communication cables were laid here in 1926 to connect Western Australia with South Africa via the Cocos Islands. The site is still known as Cable Station today and connected Australia with the world 100 years ago.

If you’re looking for an easy Perth snorkelling spot with plenty to see, Cottesloe Reef is a great choice.

Marine life you can find here:

Weedy & leafy seadragons - I have yet to see them myself as they are my favourite fish but I will at some point

An abundance of finfish - including herring, tailor, skipjack (silver trevally), whiting, morwong, tarwhine and many more

Blowfish - they are so cute and can swim around in large groups (see the photo on the left)

Octopus

Western smooth boxfish

Sting rays

Port Jackson sharks

Cottesloe Reef is easy to access. You don’t need a boat or dive gear, just a mask and snorkel and you’re ready to go. Water clarity obviously can vary depending on weather and water conditions but on a clear and calm day, it is certainly worth checking out.

In this Google Map I have saved all my favourite spots in the area, so feel free to save it for future reference, for when you plan your next trip to the Cottesloe reef.

P.S.: more information about the Cottesloe Reef - Fish Habitat Protection Area can be found on the Town of Cottesloe website & in the official information guide.
